Selecting Raw Materials for Plastic Product Design: Practical Factors

Material choice affects strength, appearance, regulatory status, and cost. Decide early so the tool and process can be designed around it.
Consider functional needs (impact, temperature, chemical resistance), appearance (color, texture, gloss), and regulatory requirements (medical-grade, food-contact, UL).
Confirm shrinkage, flow, and processing window with the material supplier or the factory. Medical or cleanroom parts often need documented grades.
At Threegon we review material options during DFM so wall thickness, gates, and draft are matched to the selected resin before steel is cut.
Result: Fewer late changes and more predictable T0 samples.
